You tighten your leg muscles up a bit to glide back and relax them to glide forward. This may sound uncomfortable but the amount of effort is very little.

I'm always surprised when I see companies make this the decision when designing the glider chair ottoman and from what I've seen it doesn't drive the price down, but limits the ottomans usability severely.
